Michael Fertik

A pioneer in digital privacy and online reputation management (ORM), Michael Fertik advocates for a universal understanding of the Internet and its powerful effects on the public’s personal and professional lives. In one of his latest efforts, Michael, along with co-author Dave Thompson, wrote Wild West 2.0: How to Protect and Restore Your Reputation on the Untamed Social Frontier, an authoritative guide to creating, repairing, and maintaining your online reputation.

In the book, which highlights a number of issues that have been exacerbated by increasing Internet usage, Michael details startling examples of legal challenges related to Internet privacy. Comparing the relatively new areas of Web 2.0 and social media to the wild west of America’s formative years, Michael also includes a host of insider tips to assist readers in developing a plan to safeguard their online reputations before any problems arise. Wild West 2.0 was released to critical acclaim in June 2010 and was the #1 bestselling book in Amazon.com’s Internet category.

Since his venture into ORM as the founder of Reputation.com in 2006, Michael has become a highly sought-after source on the subject. In 2009, he authored the foreword for Google Bomb, a book detailing the story of Sue Scheff and her landmark case against the people who embarked on an Internet smear campaign against Scheff and her business. Michael opens the book by defining “Google” and what it has come to mean to present-day society, in addition to touching on the dangers of society’s dependence on Google search results as a principal source of information.

Today, Michael Fertik continues to be recognized as one of the world’s foremost experts on Internet privacy. As such, he was recently named a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Internet Security. Michael, who serves as Reputation.com’s CEO, is a guest columnist for Reuters and is a regular guest blogger for the Harvard Business Review. He has also appeared as a guest on Fox News, Dr. Phil, BBC, CNN, and Good Morning America, among other news media. He is frequently quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Forbes, and comparable outlets around the world.
